The Wednesday Discussion: So Like, What Are Some of the Most Annoying Phrases Around?

"If any of these [annoying expressions] ever fall out of lexical favor, new ones will undoubtedly arise to take their place." E. Mohrman, Yahoo!  Contributor Network

Here's the thing, I was listening to a radio show yesterday and the host was talking about some of the most annoying words and phrases around.  To tell you the truth, I was thinking about taking a break from blogging until after Christmas. I've been pretty busy, 24/7, trying to get it together for the 25th.  But, actually, after hearing that topic discussed, I thought it would be a quick and fun discussion for today--literally!

BTW, what do you think?  Is this a sustainable topic to draw in an audience? Does it have sufficient gravitas?  Personally, I find myself a victim sometimes, because I fall into the trap of using some of these annoying words/expressions, even though, honestly, they annoy me, too!  So, my bad!

Some annoying phrases have been around forever. Others are Valley Girl, Hood speak, Chat speak or Politico speak. But all in all, they're all annoying!

Share some annoying expressions that drive you up the wall!  Dig? (oops showing my age here).  Perhaps I should say, do you feel me?  Tweet me @: maria_mckenzie. Thanks for stopping by!

Boy, I'm sure I have one or two, but I just can't think of one that drives me nuts. But that's probably because I'm distracted by a picture of a cupcake I took awhile back. It's my computer wallpaper.

Happy Holidays.

Ow, I use "actually" all the time. LOL Luckily "cool" seems to be ageless as far as an expression. I don't like the expression nowadays of something being "sick"--used in a POSITIVE way. I mean, that doesn't even make sense. (Hmm, is "I mean" one of those annoying ones??!)

Like, my biggest, like, pet peeve, is when, like, everybody just, like, you know, uses like too much!!!

This was fun!

I think it's quite funny when people speak in permanent questions? Their voice rises at the end of the word of their sentence for the question mark?

:-) Take care

There's a writer named Brian Bendis who among his many faults persists in writing characters frequently saying "The hell was that?" Not "what the hell was that." The missing word, in this case, is annoying.

I really say really too much.

Maria, the pot roast was so good, I couldn't believe I made it. There were no leftovers!

Haha, what a great post and question. I haven't decided how I feel about "it is what it is" because I made it a trademark of one of my characters. Yay!

Great Post! I can't really think of something right now but it's fun reading your post and the comments.

Merry Christmas!

I love replying to comments, but I haven't had a chance lately, trying to get ready for Christmas! Sorry all:(. But today (as I'm looking at three loads of laundry), I'm taking a little time to reply!

@Happy Whisk: I think I'd be distracted too, looking at a cupcake!

@Carol: I use "actually' and "I mean" a lot! I'm with you on something being so good it's "sick!" No sense whatsoever.

@Words Crafter: Like, I know what you mean! Drives me crazy!

@Old Kitty: That is annoying, but fun to use as a character's speech pattern!

@William: I can understand that for one character, but not several!

@Norma: Oh, really? I say it a lot, too, really!

Glad the pot roast was good:). It's amazing what the crock pot can do! I have an awesome pot roast recipe. If I can find it, I'll post it tomorrow!

@Saumya: Glad you liked the post! I kind of like "it is what it is." It's not too overused. I can imagine a character saying it as his trademark expression pretty funny:)!

@Nas: Thanks so much for your comment! I bet some annoying phrase will come to mind sooner or later!

LOL.

Whatever, dude. Whatever.

Maria McKenzie said...

@Golden Eagle: I hate that one! But I find myself saying it, especially when I'm exasperated:).

Love it! The students in my class still overuse 'like' and it drives me a little batty! :)

Hi, Jemi! "Like" drives me batty, too--especially when I slip up and use it myself:)!

My kids drive me nuts with WHATEVER. Whatever you say mom, whatever you think, or even just plain WHATEVER.

I hate it when my kids say that! I hate it even more when I say it!
